Paper Guillotines 150 Years Ago!

When the new Presco finishing machines showroom opened earlier this year, our machines department were looking for a focal point and spotted an interesting item on eBay - an old Victorian paper guillotine in full working order.  With a lot of enthusiasm from the Directors, the guillotine was bought, collected and assembled at the new showroom, which is also home to a wide range of new and reconditioned guillotines and finishing machines of all types. 

After a bit of research into the history of the guillotine, we found it was over 150 years old and manufactured by William Conisbee of Waterloo Road, London, who exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1862.

Jon Cousins of Presco's machine sales department who first spotted the guillotine for sale thinks it has been an interesting addition to the showroom.  'It certainly has been a great talking point for visitors to the showroom.  What people are really coming to see, though, is our comprehensive range of modern electric guillotines and finishing machines in this showroom.  We supply both new and used equipment - you can speak to us for advice any time.'

This machine was previously in a University of London print department and was then purchased by a letterpress printer who was using it right up until February 2011.  It's still in perfect working order, although it lacks any safety or protection systems and is not in compliance with current regulations.  'We just have it as a feature in our showroom really - although it works fine without any safety guard, I'd be a bit nervous about using it regularly' says Jon.  'We just hope its previous owners had no nasty experiences!'

The guillotine is a wonderful example of classic Victorian engineering, constructed entirely from cast iron with each part individually numbered right down to the nuts and bolts.  It is a solid testament to British workmanship that at 150 years old it works as flawlessly and smoothly as when it was first assembled.

Laminating or Encapsulating? A useful article from John Hancock explains the difference:

The term 'laminating' is used by many to encompass both laminating and encapsulating.

Ask many people what encapsulating they do and all you are met with is a blank stare.

Ask them what laminating they do and they go on at length to explain a process that they understand completely - but what they are explaining is encapsulating.

Its our own fault.  For years the industry has insisted on calling the small pouch machines 'pouch laminators', when all they are capable of is encapsulating.  But everyone knows them.  They can be bought for peanuts at just about every stationer, office supplier and department  store in the country.  You'll even find them in the supermarket!

So what are the differences, and how do we determine which process is relevant to each job?

Let's go back to the pouch laminator.  It takes a sheet of something we want to protect and encapsulates it completely in a covering of film - front and back and all round the sides.  It is finished when it is delivered out of the back of the machine.

The analysis of that really defines the fundamentals of encapsulating:

• It is a process used primarily for protection
• The enhancement of the product is secondary
• The film is larger than the sheet - covering both sides of the sheet and leaving a border of film round the edge
• It is a process that starts with a finished sheet size - often A- sizes

In addition:

• Films used are generally thick - 42mic to 250mic
• Films used are polyester
• It is likely that no further process will be carried out on the encapsulated product.

In contrast, laminating is:

• A process used primarily for enhancement
• The protection of the product is secondary
• It is a process that starts with an unfinished sheet size, usually SRA and B sizes
• The film is smaller than the sheet size.  No border of film is left around the edge
• Film is often used on just one side of the sheet - although two-sided lamination is also common
• Films used are generally thin - 25mic to 42mic
• Films used are generally polypropylene
• At least one further process will be carried out on the laminated product, even if it is only the trimming of the sheet to its finished size

 

 

Did you see... the Presco 2011 Desktop Calendar?

If you haven't seen one yet, just ask and we'll put one in the post for you.  We used the landscape case this year and were very pleased with the result.

As a guide to how much you will need to budget for landscape calendars, we produced these for around £0.59ea; print was £0.39ea and for a run of several thousand the cases work out at £0.20ea.

Standard CD size cases will work out even cheaper for print and the cases, totalling just £0.46ea - with an average of £0.30ea for print and less than £0.16/case when buying 5000 or more cases.

Desktop calendars using these cases are a great way to get your client's message out, and they're cheap and easy to post, too.  We've had several customers comment that our calendar stays on their desk - why not try it yourself this year?

 

 

The Print Finishing Event opens at Swindon

The first day of The Print Finishing Event was well received yesterday with record attendance and high levels of interest from visitors.  Representatives from Duplo and Renz are present during these days to discuss technical specification and options for the machines.  On display are many new options including the super new suction-fed mini collation/booklet making system from Duplo.  Presco is the first company in the UK to display this machine and it is already receiving encouraging interest.  Suction-fed machines have significant benefits over friction-fed options, particularly for digital work - suction fed machines are gentler on delicate stocks and do not scuff or mark the print.  With a new easy-to-use control system giving more functions, the collator is an exciting new machine for Duplo and Presco.

The first Presco catalogue for 2011 has been launched today at the Print Finishing Event, held in the Presco Swindon showrooms.  Labelled as The industry guide to print finishing supplies and machines, this catalogue contains a comprehensive range of finishing consumables and on-demand print finishing equipment.

It has already recieved the thumbs-up from printers this morning at the Finishing Event, who thought the catalogue was 'a real move forward' and 'a really excellent guide'.

Presco acquire antique Conisbee guillotine

Presco recently purchased a 150 year old guillotine manufactured by Conisbee of London.  This fascinating machine is in perfect working order and was in use at a letterpress print company until last month.  A masterpiece of Victorian engineering, this will be available for viewing at our Print Finishing Event on 8 and 9 March.

Product Focus - Peel-Seal Glue Dots

These are the same as our standard Dakota glue dots, but instead of coming on a reel, these are supplied sandwiched between two sheets of backing paper.  This means they're the ideal solution for mailings or other jobs which need an additional item like a card or voucher applied later.  Your finishers can remove one side of the backing and apply the dot to the print, leaving the other side intact.  When they're ready, your client or the end user can then peel off the paper to reveal the adhesive.

Presco have announced that they will be stocking cable ties for poster and banner fixing. ‘We have had several requests for these over the past few months and have decided it will be a useful addition.’ The 2009 Presco catalogue saw the inclusion of many new products including a range of scalpels and many other new packaging accessories.

Calendar Case Prices Released

This year Presco are offering standard CD size calendar cases from just £159.00/1000. For quantities over 1000 this price will drop to less than £150 for 100 cases. These are Presco’s lowest prices yet for the calendar cases and with half a million cases in stock currently large amounts can be ordered for next day delivery. Also available this year are mini calendar cases and landscape calendar cases – both priced well and available for next day delivery.

At last! Presco have today released details of this new promotion. The Surelam Pro 500D is one of the most respected and competent desktop laminators for digital work. Open Days a ‘Great Experience’

The Presco Finishing Machine Open Days were held at the end of July at the Presco showrooms in Swindon. With many of the large finishing manufacturers present there was a wide range of machines on show. Duplo were demonstrating their new super fast Creasing and Cutting station, the DC-615, along with the DC-445 Creaser and Perforator.
Renz were also present with their binding systems. They have a great range of wire, coil and comb binding machines, as well as large paper punching systems. After working with Presco for many years Daniel Pooley at Renz told us ‘We are delighted to be involved with the open day, Presco is one of our longest-standing distributors.’
Presco specialises in the digital and short-run market, with a wide range of desktop finishing solutions. Some of the finishing options on show were a new range of tab cutters, laminating and encapsulation machines, paper drilling, and punched and thermal binding systems. Also on display was a large range of the Ideal paper guillotines, from small manual machines up to the 5222 Digicut model.
Presco thought the event went well. ‘It was interesting to get an idea of the response to this sort of event. We took a lot of enquiries and have been able to fulfil many of these and find solutions for customers.’
Presco will be holding these Open Days again later this year and early next year.
